Fighting Speech with Speech: David Duke, the Anti-Defamation League, Online Bookstores, and Hate Filters
نویسنده
چکیده
Examination of the handling of one recently published book, white supremacist David Duke’s My Awakening, points out some important technologically-driven changes in the way books are marketed. At Duke’s website, copies of the book can be ordered and lengthy excerpts are presented. A detailed review and a different selection of excerpts of My Awakening are presented at the website of an organization opposed to Duke’s ideas: the AntiDefamation League, which markets software designed to block access to websites such as Duke’s. The major online bookstores sell My Awakening, posting reviews submitted by members of the public, most of whom give it and Duke’s politics the highest possible rating. Filtering software may recognize Duke’s website and block access to hateful rhetoric there, but similar rhetoric posted as online book reviews remains publicly available; rather than attempting to adapt filtering software to public forums such as online bookstores, information must be added at such sites enabling human visitors to detect hate speech.

Detecting Hate Speech on the World Wide Web
We present an approach to detecting hate speech in online text, where hate speech is defined as abusive speech targeting specific group characteristics, such as ethnic origin, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. While hate speech against any group may exhibit some common characteristics, we have observed that hatred against each different group is typically characterized by the use of a sm...
متن کاملHate Speech Detection with Comment Embeddings
We address the problem of hate speech detection in online user comments. Hate speech, defined as an “abusive speech targeting specific group characteristics, such as ethnicity, religion, or gender”, is an important problem plaguing websites that allow users to leave feedback, having a negative impact on their online business and overall user experience. We propose to learn distributed low-dimen...
متن کاملUtilizing Kernel Adaptive Filters for Speech Enhancement within the ALE Framework
Performance of the linear models, widely used within the framework of adaptive line enhancement (ALE), deteriorates dramatically in the presence of non-Gaussian noises. On the other hand, adaptive implementation of nonlinear models, e.g. the Volterra filters, suffers from the severe problems of large number of parameters and slow convergence. Nonetheless, kernel methods are emerging solutions t...
متن کاملAnalyzing the Targets of Hate in Online Social Media
Social media systems allow Internet users a congenial platform to freely express their thoughts and opinions. Although this property represents incredible and unique communication opportunities, it also brings along important challenges. Online hate speech is an archetypal example of such challenges. Despite its magnitude and scale, there is a significant gap in understanding the nature of hate...
متن کاملSpeech Enhancement by Modified Convex Combination of Fractional Adaptive Filtering
This paper presents new adaptive filtering techniques used in speech enhancement system. Adaptive filtering schemes are subjected to different trade-offs regarding their steady-state misadjustment, speed of convergence, and tracking performance. Fractional Least-Mean-Square (FLMS) is a new adaptive algorithm which has better performance than the conventional LMS algorithm. Normalization of LMS ...
